October Week Soccer Camps 2010

Football Central

The SFA have a website promoting grass roots football in Scotland called Football Central.

In future we will be collaborating with Football Central to try and help raise an awareness of football at the grass roots level within the Renfrewshire area.

During the summer the Bank of Scotland Soccer One final was held at the King George V Sports Grounds in Renfrew, where St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson was in attendance.

Football Central has a video interview with the Saints gaffer who talks about the importance of getting children involved in grass roots football and the impact that St Mirren's Community Programme has on the Club.

Street Football

On Monday, April 20th 2009, St Mirren Football Club's community development section launched their 'Street Football Programme' in partnership with Renfrewshire Council, PPRC and the Scottish government.

The programme is aimed at trying to give kids in the local communities something to do on nights where they would be more inclined to be loitering around the streets causing disruption. At present the St Mirren community coaches travel around areas within Renfrewshire every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening between 6:00pm and 10:00pm, taking with them three new state of the art mobile football pitches.

The coaches are currently going out into areas were the local tasking group have notified them that there are high rates of youth disorder. With the scheme being in its infancy, the popularity of the small sided games on the mobile pitches has been overwhelming, to date over 600 hundred participants, of various age groups, have been in attendance, so much so that the crime in the Linwood area alone is down by 80%.

Project Aims & Objectives

* Help Break-down barriers between the Police and young people

* Help Reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the targeted neighbourhoods

* Increase young people's interest in and the connections with the professional game

* Encourage healthier lifestyles through participation in sport

* Encourage active citizenship

* Tackle territorialism and gang related issues

* Effectively engage young people and ultimately move them on to an employability or training pathway

* Reduce youth disorder, crime and fear of crime through structured diversionary activity for young people

Street Football History

("Futbol para la paz") "Soccer for Peace" was created in Colombia. This Street football initiative was instigated after the assassination of Andres Escobar - a professional football player who scored an own goal in a game against the United States at the 1994 World Cup in the USA. The two founders of the initiative took time out of their busy daily work schedule to help the local youngsters stay clear of crime and violence and help lead them onto a path which would be socially acceptable within their own communities. The Success of this programme has had an overwhelming world-wide success rate, so much so that already there is a street football world cup competition.

The Pitch

The portable mobile sports pitch is (15 metres x 10 metres) and can be erected on any surface. Quickly assembled, it is ideal for transporting into the local housing estates and school playgrounds for a few hours at a time.
