Danny's Diary - 28/01/2011
We announced earlier today that St Mirren have signed Jure Travner until the end of the season after being released by English League side Watford.
Jure has been on loan with St Mirren since the beginning of the season and manager, Danny Lennon is glad to now have the defender as a fully fledged St Mirren player but hopes that the deal can be extended beyond the end of this term.
He said, "Watford have released Jure so we have taken him on till the end of the season which now makes him officially a St Mirren player.
"As I said it is until the end of the season but Jure is very settled where he is, we've had a chat with him but until we know our position the deal for now is until the end of the season.
"He is a player I would like to keep here on a longer basis so I hope sooner rather than later we can sit down and talk about it."
January has been a busy time for Danny and his players as they had six outings over the month.
The manager reflected on the last month: "January has been a month of peaks and troughs. Having got the positive result up at Inverness just after Christmas we gave ourselves a great window of opportunity to kick-on but we haven't grasped that.
"The games against Hearts just before the New Year and Kilmarnock after the start of the year - we were in them both for long periods but goals change games.
"This was a period where we weren't scoring goals but overall I have been delighted with the players' work-rate and organisation, we just need to be that wee bit more ruthless in front of goal.
"Going into the first game against Peterhead we had a lot of the ball and quite a few opportunities, and while we certainly didn't lose the game we ran out of time to win it which was disappointing.
"After the defeat at Aberdeen we went to Peterhead for the Scottish Cup replay where we got the six goals! The only way you'll get credit for these type of games is if you take goals as we did which was pleasing. I feel since that game Paul McGowan has started to come into his own as he is now showing himself as being more of a team player.
"We then went to Perth to play St Johnstone with our confidence up and to be fair I was delighted with how we set up as we went with a big back four with probably the biggest side in terms of physical presence we could field. It was important that we matched St Johnstone in that department and I felt we did so.
"The pitch gave neither side the opportunity to get the ball down and play so over the piece both keepers had a pretty quiet day with a draw being just about the right result on the day.
"Against Dundee United here at home we were slow in getting out of the traps. For the first ten minutes they got at us very well but we then got to grips with the game where we went on to get the upper hand and then the goal just before half-time.
"By the end of the game there were mixed emotions as we had chances to extend our lead but when they got on top we have got to honest and say we had a bit of fortune when Goodwillie hit the bar."
Late goals have been a bug-bear for St Mirren in recent seasons and Danny reckons that the solution will only come through a collective effort from everybody.
He said, "The manner in which we conceded the late equaliser was really disappointing and it actually felt like a defeat.
"One-nil is a precarious lead so my philosophy is that we should be going out to get that second goal but in doing that you have got to make sure that you remain focused and continually do the right things elsewhere on the park.
"Pressure is part and parcel of playing football so we need to pull together to ride out the storm. We also need to recognise the stages of the game, like when to kill the game or picking up the tempo.
"You do this by sticking together and doing the right things. There is a fear factor or worry about losing a goal but I'm trying to put across the message to ignore that thought and be positive by trying to score another goal."
There are only a few days left of the January Transfer Window and Danny doesn't anticipate any major changes to his squad before it closes.
He said, "We've had no enquiries about any of our players so as I've said often, if nobody goes out of the Club it is highly unlikely that we will be able to bring in anyone during this Transfer Window.
"One or two of the younger players may go out to teams but it isn't anything that will have an impact to allow us to bring in anybody new."
With no game for St Mirren this weekend due to Motherwell playing their Co-operative Cup semi-final, Danny will take the chance to rest players and prepare for the two upcoming away games.
He explained, "I had Hibs watched in their game against Rangers the other night - David Longwell, who does a fantastic job for us, took the game in.
"So I'll be taking in the Ayr United game against Stenhousemuir this weekend - we also had Ayr watched last week - and we'll be having a look at Hibs on Sunday in their game against Dundee United as well.
"The players have today and tomorrow off, they have had a lot of games over the last month or so, so it gives them a couple of days to recover.
"We'll have them back in on Sunday when we'll continue to prepare for what will be a very difficult game against Hibs on Wednesday night."
