Danny's Diary - 30/08/2010
Danny Lennon confirmed this evening that he has still to hear back from Alan Gow. While he is waiting to hear from the former Falkirk and Rangers man, the Saints gaffer knows that the clock is ticking and he will soon be turning his attention elsewhere.
He said, "I'm supposed to be getting a call from Alan Gow tonight as this needs to be put to bed one way or the other.
"I also have interest in one or two others who are presently attached to other clubs, so I need to make sure that I have the time in order to take some action to try and bring them in - so we need an answer from Alan Gow pretty soon.
"We also have a couple of trialists in with us just now, a lad called Euan Holden over from America, who is a left sided player and ex Grimsby player Nick Hegarty is still with us. Euan is the brother of Stuart Holden who played for the USA in the World Cup, I'll have a look at him over the next few days."
Yesterday, St Mirren got their first win of the season under their belt and Danny was pleased that his plan came together on the day.
He said, "The pleasing thing about yesterday's game was that the players stuck to the game plan very well. They pressed Hibs in the manner that we asked them to, were aggressive and in general done very well with a hard working performance."
Danny also admits that a lot of pressure was riding on the game yesterday, not least that the side had slipped to bottom spot of the table on Saturday evening and that the spectre of media predictions was close at hand
He said, "There was the pressure of the game being live on TV, there was pressure that we had to bounce back from the cup defeat against Ross County, pressure from losing seven goals in the last two games and obviously more pressure with Kilmarnock and Hamilton both picking up good away wins on the Saturday.
"We were bottom as we had played one game less, a position that many expect us to be in so it was up to us in front of the nation to go out there and put on a performance that would help people to make their minds up.
"The media can say what they like, in fact I've told the players that I don't want to see newspapers in the dressing-room, if they want to read them outwith that is up to them.
"As I said at the press conference after the game yesterday, I'm getting a bit sick of answering the same question about some of our players, are they going to be good enough? I think yesterday's performances answered a lot of these critics."
Having played Dundee United, Celtic and now Hibernian, Danny sees his side sit with four hard earned points. That being said he knows the SPL isn't a league where you can afford to rest on your laurels.
He said, "Our opening three games were difficult challenges for us, but I'm sure the next eight will be as well. We have ourselves in a better position at this stage than a lot of people would have credited us with so I hope the boys take confidence from that and kick-on with things.
"We now know what is required to get results and we can't switch it on and off when we want, we need to maintain that mentality and even when it isn't happening for us - like up at Ross county the other night - we must stick together."
With no game scheduled for this coming weekend due to international football taking place you would expect things to calm down a bit but Danny is determined to keep things ticking over.
He said, "The players who played yesterday had a recovery session today and we'll rest them up on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"There is a bounce game tomorrow for the players who haven't been getting playing time and another bounce game on Friday against Dunfermline - then we'll give the players the weekend off."
