The Clydesdale Bank U19 League kicked off this morning for David Longwell's young troops when they headed east to face their counterparts from Hearts.

It was a poor start to term for the young Saints as they lost 5-0 at the Hearts Academy in Riccarton.

David Longwell (St Mirren's Head of Youth Development) said after the game: "It has to be said that we were well beaten today by a good Hearts side, who were older, stonger and better than us.

"We went into the game with seven players unavailable to us through injury so we had to field a very young side that included four Under 17's and a player from the Under 16 side. We also only had two substitutes for the game.

"The positive is that a lot of the younger players got a chance to play at this level and hopefully they will learn from today's game."

Next week the Under 19 side head to Murray Park to face Rangers.
