The hot talk the last couple of days in Scottish football has been the possibility of the league set-up being restructured.

While manager Gus MacPherson would welcome more teams to the top division he believes that some clubs could be looking to make cuts rather than additions to the teams playing in the top league.

He said, "My own personal opinion is that reconstruction of the SPL would be good for the game but I'm not naive enough to think that it will actually happen.

"A lot of decisions regarding football are based around a financial situation so with Scottish football being in a difficult situation just now in terms of finances I don't see it happening.

"If you are asking purely from a football point of view I think it would be a really good idea but I don't think directors and chief executives of other clubs would look upon it favourably.

"I think there are even some clubs who are actually suggesting a smaller league set up, obviously harking back to a league of ten. If that was to happen it would be absolutely ridiculous.

"I'm not saying that with my St Mirren head on, I'm saying that with my football head on. A ten team league would be ridiculous."

St Mirren get set to face Rangers yet again tomorrow and Gus admits that this week's preparations have been a bit of a mixed bag.

He said, "Due to the icy weather this week we have trained indoors quite a bit. We have been to the excellent facility at Toryglen and we got outdoors today when we used the astroturf pitch at Ralston.

"Every club will be in the same situation, the only exceptions being Celtic and Rangers as they have undersoil heating at their training grounds.

"On the injury front we have got one or two problems. Jack Ross is still out and we have one or two other players with knocks but we're giving them right up till tomorrow morning to see how they are.

"Chris Innes has been back training the last couple of days so hopefully he'll have no reaction to that."

To the game itself and Gus reckons that it will be a tough encounter with Rangers tomorrow but not an impossible task to take something from the game.

He said, "Tomorrow will be the fifth meeting between ourselves and Rangers and we have still to play them in the cup final. To be fair this isn't that uncommon in Scottish football especially when the SPL clubs get drawn together in the latter stages of cup competitions.

"Rangers know us pretty well and likewise we know Rangers pretty well. We know how difficult a game it will be but so be it, we'll just have to get on with it.

"Sure it will be tough especially when you look at our away record. Down at Kilmarnock a couple of weeks back was our first point away from home in a while so hopefully we can gain confidence from that as well as from our last performance at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup.

"We know that we'll need to play at our best to give ourselves us a chance to take something from the game and that is what we'll be looking to do."
